Dear friends of Kidsgrove,

Following the consultation process, the Shaw Education Trust Board reviewed the most popular choices.

The top five were:
• Maryhill Academy
• Maryhill School
• Kidsgrove Academy (or School)
• Castle View School
• Gloucester Road School

In the interests of transparency it is important to share the outcome of this dialogue and why it has delayed the naming of the school slightly.

The pros and cons of each name recommendation have been reviewed by the team.

The purpose of the new name is to indicate a break from the past and a step into sensational new futures for the young people of the area.

We are eager to ensure that whatever the school is called it is a reflection of the local heritage. So, as a consequence, we have worked out a compromise which incorporates elements of all of the strongest views and opinions.

We are absolutely determined that the school community will make the final decision on the names. For this reason, we intend to propose two new names for consideration (which incorporate elements of all preferences) and, unlike last time, this will now be a formal vote, not a consultation, and will be undertaken by pupils, parents and staff of both schools. The results of this vote will be final.

Voting will open on 4th December and close at 4pm on 10th December.

Letters will be sent to parents on 4th December.

The result will be announced on 12th December and then the timeline will proceed as previously published.

The two names for consideration are:

Tower Hill Primary/Secondary School

(a combination of the old Maryhill colliery name, plus the water tower reference to the ‘slack-washer’ at the colliery)

Or

The Kidsgrove Primary/Secondary School

(place-based community name)

We are very excited by the next steps and very much look forward to learning the new name and getting the fresh start underway.
