NOVEMBER 2017

Our first-half term in Year 2 seemed to pass very quickly, we were having so much fun with our learning.  The children have settled back in after half-term very well and already we've had some super lessons. This half-term we will be continuing our learning challenge:

What would an alien visitor find exciting about Kidsgrove?

We will be investigating different materials and designing a waterproof coat for the alien to use when he visits us.  We will be planning an alien feast and cooking and preparing lots of delicious foods.  We are espeically looking forward to our visit to Gladstone Pottery Museum where we will learn all about what our local area would have been like over 100 years ago.

Check back to this page soon for photographs of our visit.

Thursday 2nd November

We had a fantastic time at Gladstone Pottery Museum, exploring the bottle kilns, finding out what jobs children would have done in the pottery over 100 years ago and designing and painting our own plates.

Thursday 9th November

This week Year 2 have been out and about, helping to improve our local community by doing some gardening.  We had a really busy afternoon weeding the planters, preparing the soil and planting lots of new plants.  We are looking forward to watching the plants grow and bloom.  We hope everyone in Kidsgrove enjoys looking at the new flowers.

Monday 13th November

It's been a busy day in Year 2 today.  This morning we enjoyed a fantastic Forest School Lesson where we learnt about natural and man-made materials,  we had to find natural materials to make a nest.  We all worked together in teams to carry sticks and branches for our nests.  Afterwards, we enjoyed some delicious hot cholcoate.

This afternoon we have taken part in a sponsored read.  We loved sharing books with our reading buddies from Year 4.

Friday 17th November

UPAK goes spotty!

We had a spotacular day when we came to school in spotty clothes

and we raised lots of money for Children in Need.

SEPTEMBER 2017

Hello and welcome to Year Two.

We have lots of fun, exciting learning adventures planned for this year and I look forward to sharing them with you all over the coming weeks.  In Year Two the children will aim to build on their excellent phonic knowledge developed in Year One to become accurate and confident readers, reading a range of texts fluently by the end of the year.  They will further develop their mathematical knowledge to include working with two digit numbers and learning a range of times tables.  The children will learn a range of skills and techniques to enable them to become confident and independent writers. The link below will give you a more detailed overview of the expected learning outcomes for children by the end of Year 2.

Year 2  Expectations.

Of course, as well as this we will have a super, exciting learning challenge topic to explore each term.  This term the title of our learning challenge is

We will be learning about local landmarks, how to read and make maps, the history of Stoke on Trent and we will be inviting our alien visitor to join us for a special feast at the end of term.  More details on our topic can be found on the topic overview, through the link below.

      Summer Term 2017

Where will our wellies take us?

The learning challenge for Year 2 in the Summer Term is based around the book "Where My Wellies Take Me." a poetry anthology by Michael and Clare Morpurgo.  Each week we will be exploring places near, far and wide!  The children have already come up with lots of exciting ideas for where our wellies can take us and so over the coming weeks we will be exploring different locations such as forests, seasides, gardens and castles.  We will also venture much further when our wellies take us into space to learn about Neil Armstrong and Tim Peake.   We may even explore under the sea too.  For more details about our summer learning challenge click the link below:

TOPIC OVERVIEW

We have been very excited to watch our sunflowers growing taller and taller each week.

We had a fantastic morning of seaside science activities.

We learnt about why it is important to eat '5 a day' and we used our DT skills to design and make healthy sandwiches for a seaside picnic.  We also made fruity ice lollies and we learnt about how materials can be changed when they are heated up or cooled down.  We all agreed our healthy ice lollies were delicious!

We learnt about the man-made and the natural features that can be found at the seaside and we used natural seaside materials to create art work in the style of Andy Goldsworthy.

Spring Term 2017

Would you rather live in England or Africa?

This is the question Year 2 will be trying to answer during our Spring Term Learning Challenge.  We will be learning about the animals, food, houses, schools, music and weather in different African countries.  Our science learning will focus on identifying which animals are mammals, birds, reptiles and so on and which animals are carnivores and herbivores.  We will look at some simple food chains and in a link with our Maths lessons we will think about the size and weight of some African animals.

TOPIC OVERVIEW

On Tuesday 10th January, Year Two took part in a fabulous African drumming workshop with "Drumroots".  We learnt all about Djembe drums, where they come from, how they are made and, most importantly, how to play them!  We had a wonderful (if very noisy!!!) time learning how to make different sounds on the drums and how to copy and repeat different rhythm patterns.  By the end of the morning we were all able to play the drums to accompany an African chant.

AUTUMN TERM 2016
